Patrick Mertes: Thriving Beyond Limits

Patrick Mertes, founder of The Diabetes Family Connection and lifelong adventurer, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age 9 in 1997. His journey with T1D began with a life-changing introduction to diabetes camp by his endocrinologist, Dr. Maryanne Morris. It was there that Patrick discovered resilience, confidence, and the power of community—learning that a positive mindset could turn life’s greatest challenges into incredible opportunities.

Since then, Patrick has made it his mission not just to live with diabetes, but to thrive with it. For nearly three decades, he has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible—proving that with preparation, determination, and support, there truly are no limits.

Project Low to High

On May 18th at 3:00 AM, Patrick and fellow adventurer Michael Shelver will take on their most ambitious feat yet: Project Low to High.

This extraordinary 135-mile journey begins at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the continental U.S. at 282 feet below sea level, and ends at the summit of Mount Whitney—the highest point—towering at 14,505 feet. And they’re doing it all in just 48 hours.

The adventure begins on bikes, covering intense climbs and 135 grueling miles to Whitney Portal. From there, they’ll transition to mountaineering gear and push to the summit on foot—navigating altitude, exhaustion, and the ever-present challenges of type 1 diabetes.
